Rosie Perez

Rosie Perez was the daughter of Lydia Perez, a merchant marine and Ismael Serano. She was born in Bushwick Brooklyn, New York City. Rosie is of Puerto Rican descent. Rosie attended Grover Cleveland High School in Ridgewood, Queens, New York as well as later, she enrolled at Los Angeles City College in Los Angeles, California. Rosie Perez was in her sophomore year of college and about to move back to New York from Los Angeles. Her friends had given her a party to celebrate. She accepted the invitation from Spike Lee to appear in his 1989 film Do the Right Thing (1989). This was her first major acting part. She was then nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Carla Rodrigo (Peter Weir’s Fearless, 1993). (She was defeated by Anna Paquin for The Piano (1993).) The Latin community was the cause of the majority of my criticism early in my career. I can remember being taken out for lunch and saying to me "Can you go to lessons to lessen your accent?" Or, "When it's a talk show, how do you not be funny? My voice was a constant source of criticism. I tried to change my voice. I did my best to alter my voice but it was not my voice that I used to speak. Thank God, my octaves decreased as grew older. Nowadays, I find it pleasing that a young person of 16 years old comes up and mimics me.Boxing is about fighting your fears. It's more about fighting for your own rights. Floyd Mayweather could be punched. A straight shot across the middle of his face. He would not blink. And I'm aware of what he's doing. Who spoke of Don Cornelius watching her dancingand observing her dancing]: Don Cornelius didn't want to see me dance . I was dancing hip hop, which was new to Californians. They were accustomed to popping and locking, so hip-hop dancing wasn't something they were looking to master. Don was like "No I'm not going to. You're a girl." I thought "What?" It's really bizarre. Then I was required to perform in high-heeled shoes. I've had never danced in high heels before, and I was wearing this tiny, short dressthat's in my back and I'm thinking, Oh my God!
