Craig was an American dancer and actress famous for her portrayals as Batgirl in the 1960s' TV series Batman and Marta who played the Orion slave girl Marta who appeared in the Star Trek episode "Whom Gods Deceive" (1969). The Huffington Post referred to her as "a pioneer in female superheroes" on TV. Yvonne Craig was raised in Columbus and was born in Taylorville in Illinois. In 1951 her family moved from Illinois to Dallas. She attended W. H. Adamson High School in Dallas and Sunset High School. However she didn't finish her education because she had only "one PE credit". Craig joined Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in the role of youngest corps de ballerina after being identified by Alexandra Danilova who is a instructor and dancer. It was a wonderful experience which helped her to perform stunts in the role of Batgirl. She quit the ballet company in the year 1957 "over an argument over casting changes" and relocated to Los Angeles in the hopes of continuing her dancing career. However, she found herself cast in films. One of her first television appearances was on the TV series Perry Mason ("The Case of the Lazy Lover") in the year 1958 with Neil Hamilton. Hamilton later was the Batgirl's stepfather, police Commissioner James Gordon. Shortly afterwards, she appeared in three films - The Young Land, The Gene Krupa Story, and Gidget (all 1959)--and also guest-starred in the TV series Mr. Lucky as Beverly Mills in the episode "Little Miss Wow" (also 1959). Craig was seen alongside Bing Crosby and Seven Women from Hell (1960), where she was in a duet with Cesar Romero. In 1962, she appeared as an actor on Western Laramie's show "The Long Road Back". Craig also starred with Elvis Presley's character in It was at the World's Fair (1963), and Kissin' Cousins (64). She also played a Russian dancer with James Coburn in Mars Needs Women (1966).
